General Swimming Pool Construction Process

Once your pool design is ready it's time for the construction part. The construction of your swimming pool takes place over a series of important stages, all of which have to be carefully coordinated to ensure the smoothest transition. Particular care is taken through each of the steps to ensure the construction process is of the highest quality. The typical construction stages of a pool include:
  • Stage 1 - Layout and Excavation
The excavation involves the positioning and setting out of the pool (typically we place wood framing that shows the size and shape of your pool). Our experienced excavators then complete the excavation and in cases of limited access we utilize “mini dig” specialists.

  • Stage 2 - Plumbing
During this phase the first part of the pipework is placed in strategic places to ensure successful operation of the pool (the remaining part will follow after stage 4). The plumbing is dependent on the design of the pool and we ensure that it all works efficiently to your design.

  • Stage 3 - Steel Construction and Formwork
After the plumbing is laid, the shell of the pool is formed via the steelwork and formwork. It's an important part of the structural integrity of your pool. The pool will slowly start to take shape in readiness for the next stage.

  • Stage 4 - Concrete Pour
With the steel and shell now laid out, the stage 4 concrete pour is done while strengthening the pool structure. At this stage you will visually start to see the pool taking shape. It typically takes 3-4 weeks (curing period) to allow the concrete to achieve its ultimate strength.

  • Stage 5 - Landscaping, Coping and Tiling
Once the pool shell is cured, the surrounding elements of the pool are completed. Coping and tiling often decorate the perimeter, steps, swim-out and sun bench of your pool. Tile is one of the details of a pool that often catches the eye and imagination.
  • Stage 6 - Electric
Despite most of us don't think about electricity when we think about swimming pools the Electrician is the unsung hero. All the amazing, beautiful, and relaxing features of your pool and spa require power. The electrician wires everything we have installed to the power source, making it all work beautifully.

  • Stage 7 - Almost there! Just finishing touches
The interior finish is a concrete coating on the floor and walls of the pool. Craftspeople need both strength and expertise to direct the flow of pressurized concrete and then to use trowels to knead the surface into the final product. Once complete it's time for the last stage...
  • Stage 8 - Water and Start-up!
The final phase is filling the pool with water and start-up. We will test that everything works properly (circulating pump, timers, jets, etc.). We will also brush, vacuum and clean any residue off the tile while simmering and balancing the water and starting the slow chlorine start up. It will take a few more days for the water to turn completely blue. Sit back, relax and get your swimsuit ready!
